RAAF Support to Commonwealth Games
RAAF Support to Commonwealth Games (1.6 mins)
Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) personnel are assisting the Queensland Police Service (QPS) with security in the lead-up to and during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, 4- 15 April. RAAF and QPS personnel are searching vehicles that enter the Athlete’s Village and other sporting venues on the Gold Coast for suspicious items to ensure public safety. The RAAF contribution includes both full-time and reserve members from across the nation. RAAF support to security for the Games also includes F/A-18 Hornets and support staff, and is just one aspect of Australian Defence Force (ADF) support to the Games, which encompasses more than 1000 personnel from all three services. Australian Army engineers, Multi Role Helicopter (MRH90) Taipan aircraft and Royal Australian Navy Clearance Divers are also supporting QPS to provide security for the largest sporting event in Queensland’s history. The ADF’s support to the Games is part of the Whole of Australian Government contribution to security, which also includes Australian Boarder Force and Australian Federal Police. Defence has extensive experience providing security assistance to major national events including the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2014, the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, and other major sporting events.
